Schweizer Familie magazine, at the beginning of 2007/08 season




This year, I realized that I need a stage to be happy. The ice is my stage for my art, where I can share the emotions with the audience. When I didn't take part at the European Championships last winter, it was an escape from my everyday life. Somehow I was going no further in training, I was stuck in a routine. I had lost the feeling for my body and therefore decided, 'No, I will not go.' I needed a break to learn what I want. This time I am going only for myself, I do not have to prove anything to anyone. I know what I can do. This awareness has made me more relaxed and has led to the insight that not only points and medals are important. I've set myself a new personal task for figure skating. First and foremost I want to further my sport, to make it more creative. This will require a lot of energy and concentration, but I'm ready.

This makes me a little sad because he only had another year before his retirement. :( I know he still did shows and all, but I can't help but feel like his body prevented him from reaching his goals, to some extent.

God I know, there's so much stuff from 07/08 where he gets his desire back after having a wobble at the start of 2007, and reading it retrospectivly knowing that he had hardly any competing left in him is really sad.

It's not so much the facial hair as the complexion? IDK, something looks off in the left side of his face, like airbrushing? Bah, it's probably just me :)

Whenever I see him bow for applause after a performance I feel his love for performing. He sort of sweeps his arms up, pauses, then flips his head up triumphantly and smiles as the audience screams. I get goosebumps sometimes, it is so beautiful.

I think he is absolutely furthering the sport with his creativity, and always has. If he ends up doing choreography for a young skater or training someone then he will pass on his "passion" for skatingggg.

IA, it actually makes me feel better to read this & know that even before he knew when (& to some extent why) he was retiring he had already decided that creativity had the biggest part of his ~heart, like that wasn't just a shift he was forced to make because of his retirement.
